A Special Kind Of Love

by: Kirsten Hawkins

My grandmother taught me to crochet the moment my clumsy, chubby fingers could hold a crochet hook. By the time that I was six, she handed me her sewing needles to thread for her because her eyes could no longer see the needle's eye. When I was eight, my mother spent all of her precious off-work night-time hours making me a spring wardrobe that I can still describe in minute detail, right down to the rick-rack that trimmed the red kerchief that matched the tulip sprigged sleeveless dress. I can recall precisely the colors and patterns of the nightgowns my grandmother sewed for me. My brothers will tell you that they've never worn anything so warm and comfortable as Nana's knitted socks. I even remember the weight of the stocking cap my mother knit to match the checkerboard cardigan - that matched the blue one she knit for my brother.

There is a magic in handmade clothing that transcends the colors, the styles, even the quality of the handiwork. It's as if every stitch and every knot was imbued with the love of the hands that crafted them. And so it was only right that when I was carrying my first child, I picked up crochet hook and thread and started making the clothing she'd wear home from the hospital.

I didn't stop there, though. Making clothing for babies is more than a way to save money or create unique clothing styles. It's a way to surround them with love, to weave your wishes into the fabric as you shape and create each piece.

Over the years, I have sewn, knit and crocheted sweaters, sunsuits, dresses, short sets, blankets, quilts, hats and pants for all five of my children. Beginning with their homecoming outfit, each of them had special clothes that I'd designed and created just for them. I would say that it is perhaps a conceit, a fond wish of my own that my feelings about dressing my babies with my own hands would have transferred themselves to my children - except:

A month ago, I dropped by my daughter's apartment. The baby girl I dressed in a strawberry printed romper - each stich carefully placed by hand, each with a whispered wish and a blessing for her good fortune - is 22 now, a college graduate with a home of her own. Tossed over a table in the corner is a blanket I crocheted for her when she was three from odds and ends of yarn. On her walls are pictures of herself wearing a sweater I made for her - the same sweater, at 3, at 5, at 7. The same sweater now clothes the teddy bear sitting on her dresser.

Except:

My 19 year old son, fully grown and living on his own, still owns the knit baby blanket that wrapped him on his trip home from the hospital. He creates and makes his own clothes - imaginative and unusual - and in the patches on his jeans and his jackets, I find bits and pieces of shirts and shorts and sweaters I made for him over the years.

My 15 year old has tucked away the first party dress I made for her - when she was six months old. She never said a word to me about - I found it in her 'treasure memory box'. And the two youngest boys? At 10 and 12, they each have their favorite blanket - ones that I knit for them when they were born.

There is magic in your hands when you create clothing for your baby, the magic of a mother's love that is never, ever completely forgotten.

About The Author

Kirsten Hawkins is a baby and parenting expert specializing new mothers and single parent issues.
Basic Turkey Hunting Tips

by: Niall Barco

Turkey hunting is challenging, exciting and in some cases becomes addictive. Turkey?s senses are extremely keen - even your heart pounding can make the turkey vanish like a puff of smoke.

Basic help in turkey hunting

Before you can hunt a wild turkey, you have got to find them. The easiest way to do this is by locating the general areas of the turkey?s habitat.

? Get a good map of the area you plan to hunt.

? Wave or use a locator call like an owl hooter or crow call or even a turkey call to try to get a response. When you hear a gobbler, mark the locator map.

? Scout for the best location on foot. Check for signs of the bird?s scratches, droppings of feathers. This information can help you locate some areas. Check along mud holes, creek banks, pastures, log roads, fencerows etc. as many trips as possible.

? Never try to get too close to the turkey. A turkey?s eyes, ears and awareness are many times better than yours.

? Choose a tree that is wider than your shoulders. This will protect you from other hunters that might come behind you and mistakenly assume that you are a real turkey.

? Camouflage is almost a must to avoid being seen. Wild turkeys have such keen vision. Many turkey hunters usually wear camo suit, cap, facemask, gloves, vest with many pockets to carry calls and maybe a snack. Also do not forget to wear dark colored socks so that when you sit down, they would not show you. But the main thing to remember: your movement is more important; regardless of how well you are camouflage. It doesn?t make you completely visible. Even though you are camouflage, you are still an unnatural form in the woods. Movement is the greatest enemy of the turkey hunter. A turkey can detect you 10 times faster than you sense the turkey.

? The best shotgun and ammunition for turkey hunting is the combination that delivers a dense, hard-hitting pattern at 40-45 yards. Practice with a target that portrays a turkey?s vital head and neck area. These parts are the ones that you should be shooting. You should have at least 8-10 pellets in the vital area at 40 yards.

? Do not hide so well that you cannot see what is happening. Blinds are useful for the turkey hunter, but when constructed so well that vision is obstructed, it is no longer a blind, and it is a hiding place, as beneficial to the turkey as it is to you.

? Cease from using gobbler calls. Although this call can sometimes be productive, it is also very dangerous. In areas where many hunters are located, you can attract hunters to you rather than turkeys.

? Never wear any red, white or blue clothes. These are the colors of the gobbler?s head - the main target of a turkey hunter.

? If another hunter is working a bird, do not mess everything up by trying to call the bird to you or spooking the bird. This is very unsportsmanlike. The true and experienced hunters do not do that kind of thing.

About The Author

Niall Barco has been learning about turkey hunting for five years. Turkey-Hunting.info offers news, information, views and turkey hunting tips.

Copyright http://Turkey-Hunting.info All rights reserved.
5 Killer Ways To Treat Athlete?s Foot

by: Daphne Cameron

If you?ve got an itch on your foot that you can?t help scratching, then you might have a dreaded case of athlete?s foot. But there?s no need to worry because here are five ways that you can treat yourself?no doctor and no prescriptions needed.

Head over to the store

Your best cure for athlete?s foot might be available at your local grocery mart or drug store. Look for creams and ointments that contain clotrimazole or miconazole as their active ingredient. These are topical creams that can be directly applied to the feet.

All you need to do is reapply the cream after you shower to clean, dry feet and then cover with a pair of cotton socks. The cream should be reapplied two to three times a day after that for about two to three weeks.

Going the natural route

Another great way to treat athlete?s foot is similar to the store method, but with a more natural oil. Tea tree oil is known for its antifungal properties and works to destroy the fungus on the feet.

You?ll need to start with clean and dry feet and then apply the oil to the affected areas. You can do this several times a day for as long as it takes to cure the symptoms.

And it makes your feet smell great.

Cures from the kitchen

When you want to get rid of your athlete?s foot, you may just have to open up a few cupboards. Both baking soda and vinegar have been shown to help with treating this fungal condition?though not at the same time.

For the baking soda, you can soak the feet in a mixture of the powder and warm water. And if you have apple cider vinegar around, use that instead of the baking soda.

Getting your feet clean of fungus

Some will tell you that soaking your feet in bleach is also a good alternative for treating athlete?s foot. However, this has to be done carefully or you might injure your feet. You should only use two tablespoons of regular laundry bleach in a gallon of warm water.

Soak your feet for ten minutes and you can see results within a week?s time.

Scaring away the itchiness and redness

And while garlic is great for vampires, it?s even better for athlete?s foot. This is because the antibiotic ingredients in the garlic help to cure the infection. Just rub a clove of garlic (one that?s been cut in half) over the affected area a few times per day.

But with all of these ways of treating athlete?s foot, the best advice is to avoid getting it in the first place. Make sure that your feet are kept dry and avoid walking on your bare feet in conditions that are likely to harbor the fungus?public showers and shoe stores where you try on the shoes without a barrier.

And of course, good hygiene will always keep your feet clean and happy, and hopefully free from itching.

About The Author

Daphne Cameron is a fitness and wellness coach and owner of http://www.athletes-foot-info.info and http://www.athletes-foot-info.info where you can find useful tips and guides on athletes foot.

Buying For Baby

by: Michelle Higgins

Well, what else can be as exciting for proud parents-to-be than the first glimpse of their bundle of joy? Shopping for baby of course. Here is some help to start your baby-shopping adventure.

Buy a car safety seat. It's the law!

You need to buy an approved car safety seat before your baby arrives. Your precious newborn has to be safe and cozy on his first car ride from the hospital to home. Some hospitals insist on you purchasing a car seat before they let you take baby home.

Shop for a soft-padded, rear-facing infant car seat to hold him snug and secure and support his back and neck. You can also go in for a lightweight one that can double up as a carrier or a rocker.

Buy an uncomplicated system with a permanent base in which the seat effortlessly snaps in and out, so that you don't have to refer to the manual every time you use it. If you are not confident about safely installing one, seek professional help.

Baby's Layette

Babies are not always born on days with the best weather. Be prepared with a basic layette for any kind of weather. Thankfully, babies cannot recognize designer wear, so it is easy to stick to your budget.

Opt for soft, absorbent clothes that can be machine-washed and dried. For cold winter months, buy long sleeve undershirts, stretchies, sweaters and pajamas with built in feet. Stock a few mittens, socks, warm woolen blankets and snug hats for outings. Buy a soft woolen sleeper to keep baby warm and cozy at bedtime.

For the summer months, you need short sleeved or sleeveless suits, hats or bonnets to protect baby from the sun and light cotton blankets.

There's more to buy

The list includes a baby crib and mattress, crib sheets, nappies/ disposable diapers, baby wipes, a baby bathtub, mild bath soap, soft towels, a sling to carry your baby and a few toys. Choose the right toys for your newborn so that they do what they are meant to- stimulate her and provide entertainment.

Tips for happy shopping

Start shopping for baby 2-3 months before you are due or earlier if you anticipate bed rest in late pregnancy. If this is your first baby, shop with a close friend or relative for helpful advice.

Dads-to-be can get involved in shopping for baby to get a feel of their impending responsibilities. A better and less tiring option is to split the list, especially if you always disagree with each other's taste.

Go by your list, not the store's. A designer wardrobe might look appealing; but your little one will outgrow her clothes quickly.

Don't let the buying overburden you, savor and cherish each moment as you imagine a new life soon snuggle in all those cute outfits!

There is nothing more comforting than being prepared for your baby's arrival. After the marathon of childbirth, the last thing you want is frantic shopping trips.

About The Author

Michelle Higgins

This article has been provided by ParentingSurvivalGuide.com.

Please visit our web site at http://www.ParentingSurvivalGuide.com to discover more articles.

Copyright 2005 ParentingSurvivalGuide.com, all rights reserved.

This article may be freely republished for noncommercial use as long as the article, including the author information and this reprint policy statement, is republished in its entirety, unedited, and with all links working.

Dog Fleas

by: Rita Hutner

Dog fleas can cause more than itching.

They are difficult to control, but, left unchecked, they can cause your dog very serious health problems.

Simple facts about dog fleas:

Fleas are probably the most successful creatures on the planet in terms of reproduction. There are over 2,400 species and they are difficult to control for a variety of reasons: One female flea will produce 25,000 offspring in one month. An unfed adult can live for several months. The chemicals used to eradicate adult dog fleas have no effect on the eggs. Fleas are very good at mutating to resist new pesticides.

Fleas are a menace to dogs! They cause allergic dermatitis, tapeworms, and anemia. Most of the eggs are not laid on the dog but in the dog's bedding, in the rug, and on the furniture. It is extremely difficult to eradicate fleas completely. The most you can hope for is to control them and to keep your dog reasonably comfortable during the warm, moist flea season.

The best way to control dog fleas is to remove them from your dog and your house. Take him to a groomer for the day and have him bathed with veterinarian-approved flea shampoo. Spraying or dipping him with a residual pesticide has little or no lasting effect. While he is out of the house, hire a company that uses a non-toxic product to spray the carpets and the furniture. These companies usually guarantee a flea-free home for one year.

Some dogs are bothered more by the use of pesticides than they are by fleas. Flea collars, sprays, powders, and shampoos are all loaded with pesticides. Beware! If your dog is into serious scratching, your veterinarian can prescribe medication for the itching. It is also very important that you discus with your veterinarian which products you should use on your pet to rid him (or her) of dog fleas. There are a lot of products on the market that claim to get rid of fleas; not all of them work and some could be harmful to your dog.

>From this point on, it is important for you to vacuum the carpets, furniture, and your dog's bedding everyday. Place the cut-off end of a flea collar, or a moth crystal, into your vacuum cleaner bag to kill any vacuumed adult fleas. Vacuum the dog if he will let you! Groom him daily with a flea comb. Do not be surprised if you occasionally find a flea on him. He will bring them in from outside. Remember, you cannot get rid of them, only control them.

Effective Treatment of Your Yard:

In cases where pets spend most of their time outdoors, it may also be necessary to treat the yard for dog fleas. One way to determine if the yard is infested is to walk around the property wearing white athletic socks, pulled to the knee. If fleas are present, they will be seen against the white background of the socks.

Outdoor flea treatment should focus on areas where your pet rests, sleeps, and runs, such as doghouse and kennel areas, under decks, along fences and next to the foundation.

It is seldom necessary to treat the entire yard or open areas exposed to full sun. However, as long as you are treating the outdoor area, it may be a wise move (particularly the first time) to treat as large an area as possible. Once again, check with your vet to determine which product to control dog fleas will be most effective for out door use and will not be harmful to your pet. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully.

Summary of Key Treatment Steps:

1.	"De-fleaing" your pet is only one essential step in ridding your home of fleas.

2.	It is critical that you treat areas in your home where your pet spends time.

3.	It is most effective if you treat your pet and your home on the same day.

4.	Treat every week to ten days until the infestation cycle is broken. After that, once a month or as needed.

5.
The History of Knitting

by: Howard I Schwartz

Hand knitting has been practiced for thousands of years. Where and how this art was invented is still a mystery. Some people believe that knitting began when primitive man made webs out of roots. Others think that Arabian nomads carried the craft into Europe. Still others think that this art originated in Persia. Regardless of where the craft began knitting is the textile infant.

From the beginning the art of knitting was an occupation for women. The oldest remnants of seemingly knitted pieces are those worn as socks. It seems that socks and stockings were knitted because they had to be shaped to the foot or leg. Records seem to indicate that sweaters were first knit in the 17th century. At this time the purl stitch does not seem to have existed. The first time the purl stitch is mentioneddates from the mid 16th century.

The earliest example of true knitting is a pair of knitting socks found in Egypt, dating back to A.D. 1100-just over 9 centuries ago! These early socks were worked in Nalebinding, an ancient craft which used thread to create fabric by making knots and loops. It was done with a wood or bone needle. There are many versions of nalebinding, and some of them look like true knitting.

During Medieval times the craft was controlled by guilds. Knitted garments were worn by the wealthy class. By the 16th century knitting had advanced into a craft. During the Elizabethan era knitting schools were established in Britain. Knitted stockings provided an income for the poor. These stockings were exported to Germany, Holland and Spain. During these times men wore short trunks so fitted stockings where a fashion necessity. Dales knitting, which began at the end of the 16th century, must hold the record for the longest knitting industry in England. Articles from this cottage knitting industry are preserved in the Museum of Hawes in Wensleydale.

Knitting is important in Scottish history. During the17th and 18th centuries whole families were involved in knitting garments. Sweaters were important to the fisherman of the Scottish Isles. Fair isle and cable patterns were used on aran sweaters. During the French-Nepoleanic wars woman got together to knit socks and mittens for the soldiers. This practice continued through World War I and World War II.

Different types of knitting originated in different parts of the world. Two-color knitting or fair isle knitting began on a group of islands north of Britain. The first example of this intricate pattern is believed to be knitted around 1850. The Prince of Wales wore a fair isle sweater in 1921. Yet other legends say that fair isle knitting was inspired in 1588 when a Spanish ship was wrecked off Fair Isle and the crew inspired native knitters to new forms of knitting patterns. Many lace patterns in use today still have French names. German knitting also has a long history. Four or five needles were often used by German knitters. The picture of the knitting Madonna, The Visit of the Angels, painted around 1390, by a Munich painter, documents this long-established craft of knitting.

The Industrial Revolution took over the hand craft of knitting through the invention of the knitting machine. Hand knitting lost its ability to compete with these knitting machines. Knitting as an art and craft fell to the wayside and was kept alive as a hobby.

It is interesting to watch the renaissance of knitting. Different techniques from different parts of the world are being combined. Specialty yarns have been created from different fibers. These new yarns produce stunning results. Companies are aspiring to make their knitting patterns the height of fashion. Celebrities have been seen knitting, which helps to popularize the revival of the art of knitting. Manufacturers and designers are working together to stimulate interest and creativity within this craft.

About The Author

Howard Schwartz is a partner in several business strategy groups, including HJ Ventures International, Inc.
All About Plantar Warts

by: Michael Sanford

Some of us still believe with the old folk tale, that you will get some warts when you touched a toad. Don?t you know that when you take a public shower or simply when you just walk around bare footed will possibly increase the plantar warts in your feet? When your feet perspire and the moisture is trapped, the plantar warts spread out in the area of the foot, in which they increase in size and have their babies. These could be some of the possible reasons why some of us have plantar warts.

Well, some of us are not aware of these plantar warts. Plantar warts are just the common skin infection on the bottom side of our foot. Most teenagers have warts and these plantar warts are cause by the virus that usually enters the body through a break in the skin. The virus of the plantar warts often grows in warm, moist environments. It could be difficult for you to determine the plantar warts from the calluses, in which plantar warts can erupt anywhere on a particular foot. Anyhow, the plantar warts have tiny black dots on the surface layer, where these are the ends of the capillary blood vessels. While the calluses have no blood vessels and usually resemble a yellow candle, wax and are located only over the weight bearing areas of the foot which are perpetually irritated. Since plantar warts are soft tissue condition of the foot, they can too be painful. Since the virus can interfere the skin through those small and invisible cuts and scuff, the warts can appear anywhere on the skin, but those who are on the sole are only suitably called as plantar warts.

The plantar warts appear to be hard, flat, with its rough surface, and well-defined boundaries. They warts are commonly raised and fleshier every time they appear on the top of the foot or on the toes. The color of the plantar warts sometimes varies. They are often gray or brown, with a center that appears as one or more pinpoints of black. Some people used to walk barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground, which they don?t even think that those viruses are waylaying. If the plantar warts are not treated well, the warts can possibly spread out to an inch or more in circumference and can multiply into clusters of several warts, often called the mosaic warts. Plantar warts are a kind of infectious lesions, where it can be spread through scratching, touching, or even by having contact with skin shed from another wart. The bleeding of the warts may cause another plot to create other warts.

Even though warts are harmless, they too are painful. However, the first thing that you should do if they are painful is to seek treatment. You should consult for the best physician that carefully will trim the warts, and will apply a chemically treated dressing. Usually, the physician gives the patient of the plantar warts some information for him to follow for a self-care. The salicylic acid patches are required to be applied on a daily basis, and having proper foot hygiene includes the regular use of the burnish stone so to free your feet from the plantar warts. Nevertheless, sometimes, it may take a few weeks for the entire plantar warts to disappear. There are some instances that the plantar warts are develop on the weight bearing of the foot, particularly on the ball of the foot, or the heel, which sometimes causes to be the source of a sharp and burning pain. The pain usually occurs when the weight is brought directly on the wart. If possible, the treatment is required to be repeated regularly until the plantar warts are impaired. Though plantar warts disappear after a short time, they can recur too in the same location, frequently.

Everyone must take some prevention to avoid having the warts on our body, or having the plantar warts on our feet. You should prevent walking barefooted, but except on sandy beaches. It is required to change your shoes or your socks everyday, and must keep your feet clean and dry always. Checking the feet of your children habitually is one way of practicing their personal hygiene too. If possible, you should avoid having a direct contact with warts, or from other persons who have warts on the body, so to assure of having a hygienic body. Growths on, or some changes in your skin should not be ignored. Have some time to visit your podiatric physician.

About The Author

Michael Sanford

For more information on warts please check out http://www.free-herpes-info.com/.
